WORSHIP SERVICE

August 30, 2009 – 10:00 a.m.

Instrumental Prelude

*Call to Worship:  “We Bring the Sacrifice of Praise(Sing Twice)

       We bring the sacrifice of praise into the house of the Lord;

       We bring the sacrifice of praise into the house of the Lord.

       And we offer up to You the sacrifices of thanksgiving;

       And we offer up to You the sacrifices of joy.

*Welcome

*Opening Prayer and Mutual Greeting

*Songs of Praise:     “To God Be the Glory”

To God be the glory- great things He hath done!

So loved He the world that He gave us His Son,

Who yielded His life an atonement for sin

And opened the life gate that all may go in.

Refrain:  Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord!

               Let the earth hear His voice!

               Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord!

               Let the people rejoice!

               O come to the Father through Jesus, the Son,

               And give Him the glory- great things He hath done!

O perfect redemption, the purchase of blood-

To every believer, the promise of God.

The vilest offender who truly believes,

That moment from Jesus a pardon receives. Refrain

Great things He hath taught us; great things He hath done,

And great our rejoicing through Jesus, the Son.

But purer and higher and greater will be

Our wonder, our transport, when Jesus we see. Refrain

                                        “Alleluia”

Refrain: Alleluia, alleluia; we join in song to praise the Lord.

              Alleluia, alleluia; we sing new songs to praise the Lord.

John saw the angels and the saints in glory;

he heard the song they sing to praise the Lamb.

Thousands are praying, millions are singing;

aloud they raise their voice to praise the Lamb.   Refrain

They sing together a new song of heaven

to praise the Lamb who gave his life for us:

power and glory, wisdom and honor

be to the Lamb who gave his life for us.   Refrain

Then all the creatures of the earth and heaven

repeat the chorus, praising God in song:

blessing and honor, glory and power

be to the Lord forevermore. Amen!   Refrain

Offering for Pine Grove Ministries

     Offertory Song:  “O Jesus, I Have Promised”

O Jesus, I have promised to serve you to the end;

be now and ever near me, my Master and my Friend.

I shall not fear the battle if you are by my side,

nor wander from the pathway if you will be my guide.

O let me feel you near me; the world is ever near:

I see the sights that dazzle, the tempting sounds I hear.

My foes are ever near me, around me and within;

but, Jesus, draw still nearer and shield my soul from sin!

O let me hear you speaking in accents clear and still,

above the storms of passion, the murmurs of self-will.

O speak to reassure me, to hasten or control;

and speak to make me listen, O Guardian of my soul.

O Jesus, you have promised to all who follow you

that where you are in glory your servants shall be too.

O guide me, call me, draw me, uphold me to the end,

when you in glory take me, my Savior and my Friend.

Ministry of Music:           “The Holy City”            John Veenstra & Elsha Meidema

*Song of Preparation:    “Ancient Words”

Holy words long preserved for our walk in this world,

They resound with God’s own heart.

O, let the ancient words impart.

Words of life, words of hope,

Give us strength, help us cope.

In this world wher-e’er we roam, ancient words will guide us home.

Ancient words, ever true, changing me and changing you;

We have come with open hearts, O, let the ancient words impart.

Holy words of our faith handed down to this age,

Came to us through sacrifice.

O, heed the faithful words of Christ.

Holy words long preserved for our walk in this world,

They resound with God’s own heart.

O, let the ancient words impart;

Ancient words, ever true, changing me and changing you;

We have come with open hearts, O, let the ancient words impart.

Ancient words, ever true, changing me and changing you;

We have come with open hearts, O, let the ancient words impart.

Ancient words, ever true, changing me and changing you;

We have come with open hearts, O, let the ancient words impart.

We have come with open hearts, O, let the ancient words impart.

Scripture:  1 Samuel 16

The Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him as king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and be on your way; I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem. I have chosen one of his sons to be king.”

2 But Samuel said, “How can I go? Saul will hear about it and kill me.”

The Lord said, “Take a heifer with you and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.’ 3 Invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what to do. You are to anoint for me the one I indicate.”

4 Samuel did what the Lord said. When he arrived at Bethlehem, the elders of the town trembled when they met him. They asked, “Do you come in peace?”

5 Samuel replied, “Yes, in peace; I have come to sacrifice to the Lord. Consecrate yourselves and come to the sacrifice with me.” Then he consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice.

6 When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab and thought, “Surely the Lord’s anointed stands here before the Lord.”

7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

8 Then Jesse called Abinadab and had him pass in front of Samuel. But Samuel said, “The Lord has not chosen this one either.” 9 Jesse then had Shammah pass by, but Samuel said, “Nor has the Lord chosen this one.” 10 Jesse had seven of his sons pass before Samuel, but Samuel said to him, “The Lord has not chosen these.” 11 So he asked Jesse, “Are these all the sons you have?”

“There is still the youngest,” Jesse answered, “but he is tending the sheep.”

Samuel said, “Send for him; we will not sit down until he arrives.”

12 So he sent and had him brought in. He was ruddy, with a fine appearance and handsome features.

Then the Lord said, “Rise and anoint him; he is the one.”

13 So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the Lord came upon David in power. Samuel then went to Ramah.

David in Saul’s Service

14 Now the Spirit of the Lord had departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord tormented him.

15 Saul’s attendants said to him, “See, an evil spirit from God is tormenting you. 16 Let our lord command his servants here to search for someone who can play the harp. He will play when the evil spirit from God comes upon you, and you will feel better.”

17 So Saul said to his attendants, “Find someone who plays well and bring him to me.”

18 One of the servants answered, “I have seen a son of Jesse of Bethlehem who knows how to play the harp. He is a brave man and a warrior. He speaks well and is a fine-looking man. And the Lord is with him.”

19 Then Saul sent messengers to Jesse and said, “Send me your son David, who is with the sheep.” 20 So Jesse took a donkey loaded with bread, a skin of wine and a young goat and sent them with his son David to Saul.

21 David came to Saul and entered his service. Saul liked him very much, and David became one of his armor-bearers. 22 Then Saul sent word to Jesse, saying, “Allow David to remain in my service, for I am pleased with him.”

23 Whenever the spirit from God came upon Saul, David would take his harp and play. Then relief would come to Saul; he would feel better, and the evil spirit would leave him.

Sermon:    God Looks at Us Differently

Applicatory Prayer

*Hymn Response:  “Take My Life and Let It Be Consecrated”

Take my life and let it be Consecrated, Lord, to Thee;

Take my moments and my days- Let them flow in ceaseless praise,

Let them flow in ceaseless praise.

Take my hands and let them move At the impulse of Thy love;

Take my feet and let them be Swift and beautiful for Thee,

Swift and beautiful for Thee.

Take my voice and let me sing Always, only, for my King;

Take my lips and let them be Filled with messages from Thee,

Filled with messages from Thee.

Take my will and make it Thine- It shall be no longer mine;

Take my heart- it is Thine own, It shall be Thy royal throne,

It shall be Thy royal throne.

*Benediction
